Glare

Published February 23, 2007

Glare, the latest release from Hills West, penetrates a world flooded in light. Warm, lush synths are evocative of a summer afternoon and nostalgic, soft, tones are carefully modulated in and out of consciousness.

Hills West is the solo project of Tom Carey Jr. produced in one of the last remotely wooded areas of Long Island, New York. Glare touches on many different feelings yet overall the album seems reminiscent of a youthful time.

Starting off the album with "Sonsun" immediately we are placed into horizon thick with haze where indecipherable voices are smothered in thick organic tones. Beautiful vignettes such as "Spring Fire"and "Salvia Pond" add to the dreamy youthful memories common to the album. Then waking up to reversed melodies of "Noe Jick Day" adds a melancholy quality that is carefully not overdone.
